The Santos, the first true Cartier wristwatch, debuted in 1904 and was designed by founder Louis Cartier and named for Alberto Santos-Dumont, a dashing Brazilian aviator. Louis later created and patented the deployment-folding clasp in 1910. In 1917 the famous Cartier Tank watch was introduced, its design reminiscent of an Army tank to honor the tank commanders who defended France during the first World War. The Cartier Pasha wristwatch was developed in 1933 for the Pasha of Marrakech in order to design a watch suitable for swimming, making it one of the earliest water-resistant designs.
